Hangar Bicocca

Hangar Bicocca was established in 2008 as a venue for the production, promotion and exhibition of contemporary art, in an open and dynamic relationship with other visual and performance-based artistic disciplines. Today it is the home of always free exhibitions dedicated to contemporary art.

In 2004, the project began in earnest with the conversion of an enormous industrial facility, which once belonged to the Ansaldo Group, into a space dedicated to showcasing international contemporary art.

Every exhibition and event presented and produced by Hangar Bicocca stands out for its experimental nature, with a particular focus on the staging of site-specific projects that have what it takes to connect with the unique features of the space.

Since 2004, Hangar Bicocca has unveiled a rich array of solo and group shows – some in partnership with other public or private bodies – that have combined to make it part of the frame of reference for the Italian cultural scene, as well as one of the leading spaces for artistic production; one that is recognized not just by the public but also by the international artistic community.

The most important exhibitions hosted at the venue over the past seven years have included solo shows by Mark Wallinger, Marina Abramovic, Lucy & Jorge Orta, Alfredo Jaar, Anthony McCall and Christian Boltanski. There have also been several significant international group shows and a plethora of cultural, musical and performance events that have attracted a diverse and ever-increasing number of visitors.
